Container Load Calculator. Fill the box, not the bill.

Pick a container, fill it with loose cartons or pallets, and watch the load build in 3D. Unit count, weight against payload and volume used update as you type, with a warning the moment you go over a limit. Get the whole thing emailed as a load plan your forwarder can work straight from.

Every figure here is indicative. Container dimensions and payloads vary by shipping line, and road weight limits can cap a load below the container's rating. Confirm with your forwarder or carrier before booking.

Small print. The figures this tool gives you are estimates to help you plan. They aren't quotes, guarantees or professional advice. They're worked out from what you enter and from published rates, formulas and rules, which can change without notice. What you actually pay will depend on your carrier, 3PL, customs authority, contracts and the specifics of your goods. Always confirm with the relevant provider or a qualified adviser before you price, book, buy or declare anything. SHIPMAX accepts no liability for decisions made on the strength of these figures.

The working out

Understanding container loading

The calculator above works out how many cartons or pallets fit in a sea freight container, how much of its payload they use, and how much of its space you are actually paying for. Get it right before you book and you avoid the two expensive surprises: a container that is over its weight limit, and a bigger (or second) container booked when a smarter load would have fitted.

How the calculator works

It takes your carton or pallet footprint and lays it across the container floor, testing it both ways round (as entered and rotated 90 degrees) and keeping whichever orientation fits more units in a single layer. Loose cartons are then stacked to the load height you set, up to the container's internal height. Pallets are loaded one tier high, or two if you choose double stacking and the height allows.

Units per container = best units per layer × number of layers

It then totals the cargo weight against the container's maximum payload and the cargo volume against its internal volume. Go over the payload and the calculator flags it straight away, so you see the problem on screen rather than at the port.

Weight or space: which runs out first?

Every container load is limited by one of two things. Dense goods such as liquids, tiles or machinery hit the payload limit while the container is still half empty, which is why heavy cargo often ships in 20ft boxes. Light, bulky goods such as apparel, homeware or packaging fill the space long before they get near the weight limit, which is where a 40ft high cube earns its keep. Watch the payload and volume figures together: whichever reaches 100% first is the one setting your cost per unit.
